Just had a debate with a friend regarding random encounters in video games. I personally think it's primitive & outdated, as it limits games' pursuit of realism. What do you guys think?

I side with BrandX. While games may base on realism, the end result is far from that. Cutting down hideous, towering monsters with a sword-attack with which I shoot a planet-broad laser from the tip...I don't see how random encounters are a problem in that environment. On a sidenote, I like this form of combat, because I puts me in an enclosed arena, which I prefer over real-time combat, out in the open.

I can understand that. Thanks for your input.

I prefer the 'touch-battle' form of combat because the player is given the freedom of whether or not to battle at certain times. It's a lot less time-consuming and makes navigating/backtracking simpler.
That's not to say I totally detest games with random encounters in them; I just have a preference of touch-battles over random battles.

I like games with random encounters where you have a broad range of abilities and ways of destroying the enemy. Like in FFV.

However it is quite frustrating to be stopped every few steps though. Great way to add tension to a game.

*Sigh*, yet the cultural barrier, complemented by the dick-waving competition between nations makes it so that this title will NOT feature dual audio....interest in getting this title had decreased by 50%.

Dec 08, 2012 - 10:48 PMWhat i hate the most is that i'm positive that i will be able to sleep l8 at night and wake up early, but when i wake up i'm half dead with red dried eyes and only enough energy to lift your head up for 3 seconds... always falling for the same trap... every night D: haha
