Hiii~ I'm sure there are quite a few people here knowing about IT :P

I'm quite concerned about my PC, I bought it about 6 months ago. At first it performed very well (intel i7@3,4Ghz, 8GB ram, Win7) but these days it's becoming reeeaaaally slow and it does weird stuff... today was so weird that I made a reboot and right after getting to the desktop, WITHOUT RUNNING ANY PROGRAM I took this screenshot:



I made some research about svchost and I've found that those values shouldn't be that high...

I'm not an expert but I don't think that's very normal... is it? I have made a full check on viruses and all that crap, but I'm not 100% sure my PC is clean...

What do you guys think?

First of all, those numbers are correct if you are using windows 7 (which you are).
Install a good Internet security program. Like Kaspersky, Bitdefender, etc. Make sure it has a firewall. Beside from that, make sure your pc gets enough air, don't close the air holes/vents. If it's in a very dusty room, make sure to keep the inside of your pc clean so the holes doesn't get clogged. Make sure to uninstall unnecessary programs. Try to avoid unnecessary bootup programs.

If the PC is still slow, which I presume is caused by the hard drive usage,
Try this program:

Chack what is using your hard drive the most, if it's something suspicious, or unnecessary, accordingly uninstall it or kill the process.

Beside from this It's hard the say what the cause is of the slowness.

It's normal, Windows 7 usages up a bit of your RAM just to "function", it's nothing to be worried about.

As for viruses and etc, just scan now and then with some free programs, Avast is popular.

If you are not getting BSOD then it most likely is not the svchost virus.

If it only lasts around 5 minutes after you boot up your pc then it's your start up programs taking a toll on a slow hard drive. If it lasts longer than that then it just means your pc needs a little optimizing. The easiest way out of it is to backup, reformat and reinstall. But I would not recommend it.


My recommendation is:

Install the free version of MBAM here and run a scan.


Install CCleaner here, run it and let it do it's magic.


Also, disable unnecessary startup programs.
In the search bar on the start menu type in msconfig and run the program.
Go to the startup tab and disable everything.
Restart.
If anything isn't working properly then get back into msconfig and check programs related to whatever is not working.

Thank you guys for your answers, I've tried everything you said.

First of all, I have never seen the blue screen with this pc, which is good, but the problem hasn't disappeared ... the PC is so slow that I can't even edit video, it's just impossible. 1 or 2 weeks ago I edited full hd video perfectly, so I don't know what kind of crazy stuff has happened here...

svchost keeps being the process with more memory usage... in fact it's about 300 mb...

I'm seriously considering a format and reinstall of win7.

Why do you not recommend formatting ?

Simple, It takes a nice amount of time and it is your last resort. When you have re-installed Windows, make sure to install all drivers, including the chipset driver. Many people seem to forget to do this.

I don't recommend formatting because most of the time it's more trouble than it's worth, as Itachi said. There are also a few really nasty viruses that can persist through a reformat.

Try this out first. If the problem is still there then go ahead and reformat.

I didn't see your last message in time and I formatted... now I understand why you didn't recommend it xD the format itself was really easy but I had some problems afterwards xP

Anyway, the problem is finally gone now and my PC works so smooth that I just had an orgasm.

Thank you for all your help, to begin with, I didn't know about the chipset driver thing.. thanks for that Itachi!

And Fatal, your advice is really appreciated, you introduced me some nice software :) I'll keep the last link too, in case the problem shows up again.
