I've got alittle problem here or maybe it isn't and i just think it is. As of right now i have my motherboard installed (ASrock Z77 Extreme 4) and i've also got my power supply installed as well (SeaSonic 650w gold certified) and i've hooked up all my wires and installed my memory. The motherboard is on stand offs in my case. When i try and plug it in nothing happends. No fans are spinning no power lights are turning on no nothing. Any idea what the problem could be?

If it makes any difference i do not have a CPU just yet if that makes a difference at all along with no video card installed either and the heatsink due to obvious reasons also isn't plugged in.I still have not removed the plastic cap from the CPU socket.

Motherboards do not operate without a CPU, not even BIOS can run without something to process the BIOS program. The signal to turn on is literally not getting processed by the motherboard, which in turn does not put power to anything else.

In short, you need a CPU.


edit: assuming of course that your motherboard does not have some kind of built in sub-processor, which would be a neat feature and invalidate my statement, but it's one i have not heard of yet.

Alright cool.

With this being my first build and all i wasn't sure what to expect but the thing is though my fans are not being turned on either (the ones that are mulex connectors to the power supply.

I don't even know if my PSU is working due to the fan not turning on until it's under 20% load or something

Yeah even the PSU is tied to to the motherboard for it's activation, the switch on it's side only puts it in standby mode, it needs the signal from the motherboard, which is actually integrated into the power cables if memory serves, to activate.

i guess i'll know the moment of truth in a weeks time then :D as you can tell from the guild chat i've been doing research out the wazzu on finding a decent budget build with quality parts

It's the only way to go to get a good build without breaking the bank, just about every single high end machine is charging 30-40% for the brand name it seems. Best of luck to ya.

Unless you wait until black friday or cyber monday in the United States to buy one :p

Thats where I got my alienware last year at dell.com on cyber monday a ($1500) computer for ($800).

i know but when i was wanting to see if my work was going to get results for what i had so far and nothing happend i really was freaking out thinking i shorted the motherboard or if my memory was bad or if the PSU was dead lol. If it really is just the CPU just missing then i'll be ecstatic and jumping with joy lol
