On a really weird twist of fate side note out of the blue. One of the things I'm actually most excited for is the crafting system.

This is the first time I have ever been excited about crafting in a game.

I feel.... weird.

If the battle system can satisfy most people then FFXIV might be one of the best mmorpgs since...well since a while. I really hope it's good, but I'm extremely disappointed in the class and weapon choices. Hence why Dark Souls/Dark Souls II will get more play time from me.

Whats wrong with them? they seem fairly generic to me :surrender: or is that the problem?

I'm hyped for Dark Souls II as well, but all the classes for FFXIV were not revealed in the alpha, we'll get to see the rest soon and perhaps the rest of the disciples. Other than that, all the ones revealed so far are staple FF classes people have come to love. We'll see if they try anything new in the beta or future.

I thought the other disciplines besides Magic and War were for crafting and gathering materials? Disciples of Hand and Land. Can you actually fight with these? o.O

Generic? The current FFXIV classes define the word. They need more classes if they want people to play and stay. Not everyone to be a mage, and see everyone else as a mage. And the dragoons having all the fun.

You listed only the Jobs. FFXIV: ARR has 8 classes for the Armoury, plus 8 specialized jobs.

Disciples of War - Gladiator, Pugilist, Marauder, Lancer, and Archer.
Disciples of Magic - Conjurer, Thaumaturge, and Arcanist.

Jobs - Paladin, Monk, Warrior, Dragoon, Bard, White Mage, Black Mage, and Summoner.

Quote

The Job System builds on the Armoury System, allowing Disciples of War and Disciples of Magic to further specialise their roles by changing them into signature Final Fantasy jobs. After completing a prerequisite quests, players are able to upgrade their class to a job by equipping a certain item, and may return to their class by un-equipping said item. Jobs unlock extra abilities that are suited for party play, however unlike classes which allow for equipping abilities from any other class, jobs only allow for the equipping of abilities from two other preselected classes.

I could spend months trying to figure out the difference between jobs and armoury and still don't get it. Jobs is the classes everyone gets and armoury is? The classes you can get into as you level?

It still feels really limited, this is the kind of thing that can make someone wait years until they add a classes that aren't the same boring old healer, dps, tank.

This is really why I found B&S really fun, it's not the same old thing where unless you're the DPS class you just stand there. Spam...

Yet in B&S, you're all three. DPS/Heal/Tank. So it's 3x as boring!

Seriously though, between GW2 and B&S, sometimes I wish we had a new and awesome MMO that recycles the trinity. The trinity is a lot of fun, specially in dungeons and raid instances/battlegrounds.
Some people don't appreciate it, but that's fine.

Don't forget one of the biggest appeals for final fantasy about classes and class selection, that unlike other games, in FF you can be Ditto.

"Limited" is definitely not the word I word choose to describe it.

I feel like the only class that would get boring would be Summoner/FM.. Because let's be honestly, the caster classes always get the most boring the fastest. At least for me. O:

Indeed. Sometimes I want to pick a healer or a debuffer and just specialize and do my job properly. I don't want a party where everyone can heal/DPS/tank. It's the core of FF, make your own party and choose your own classes.

I take it you haven't played half the Final Fantasy games, Ghastly?

The way they described it, the Job system is there for a bit of specialization, but that doesn't mean that once you pick a job, you are in that job forever. Jobs are more for party play so I'd imagine people will mostly be using jobs when clearing dungeons or possibly in group PvP. And besides that, you can still use your class skills while your in a job (not all of them,m but still) so to me, it seems quite robust.

So they're really going to stick to the FFXI formula. (We had moon-phases back then too. Typically affected crafting professions and fishing).
This is good.
I hope they add elemental attributes to the zones (IE: Desert = Fire/Earth, Snowy Fields = Ice/Water, etc). just like in FFXI. I loved those sandstorms and other crazy stuff in the Dunes.
