It probably depends on what you're willing to skimp on and if you jump on deals. I'd say you could build a pretty good comp with $1,000. Perhaps 7-8?

It's because your looking at alienware. That name has a $200 name tag on it without it being attached to anything. Now I'm nit saying that alienware makes junk because that is far from the truth but you can easily find better deals then what they have.

Thanks for the answers guys. i have been bargain hunting with a friend helping him build his $1000 computer and now i know what to expect. Then it will be my turn when I get the cash to do so.

I think you should follow Sera's advise.
Whether you don't think the source is ideal, the items listed are actually very nicely priced.
The bottom line is this: Put it together yourself and use rebates. Always use rebates. If there is no rebates or discounts and you are looking for the biggest bang for the buck? Wait. Prices go down eventually.

My advise: Do not be afraid to buy last year's tech.
Don't be deceived by fancy new toys. More often than not, they cost twice the price of last year's and only perform 10-30% better (Not worth it!).

Reddit isn't all that bad, except for the occasional pitchfork mob on r/gaming. Just ignore the jerks, and you find a lot of good people.

If you go on r/buildapc, you can put a post up as Build Help, list what you're interested in, your price range, etc. and others can help suggest parts for you. Or if you have parts in consideration, you can put a post to see if there are better alternatives or what gets you the best bang for your buck. r/buildapcsales is just a nice place to find recent deals. Unless you'd rather search every site or store yourself.
