Somewhat old interview by Art Director Kim Hyung Tae. It was taken like 2 or 3 days into 2nd CBT....so its been a while. However, it goes more into detail about the models and promise of more stylish attires. Not to mention a possible male character revamp (girls rejoice!)

Quote

The attire is the center of attention in BnS. What will the attires we get from siding with one of the factions be like? (The factions that appear later in the game)

Kim Hyung Tae: It seems like a lot of the users chose the Hong Chun Cult attire. But I am revealing this now; the attire for Moo-Lim Allegiance will be way better looking. We will be adding more attire for each faction in the future content. Keep your hopes up.

The users are amazed at the amount of attire even now. What is the one attire that you put the most effort on?

All attires were made with great effort. But if I were to choose, I would say it’s the Hong Moon Clan attire (the one you get from tutorial).

One of the factors users take into account when picking attires is the one the NPC is wearing. Will users be able to wear those as well?

It will come down to whether the users can acquire it or not. All attires in the game can be worn by the characters, but just not attainable yet. There will be a lot more attires that become attainable in the future, so do not worry.

What would be the best attire one can acquire in a CBT?

I can’t tell you the method in obtaining one, but the one shown in the artwork behind me can be acquired in 2nd CBT. I don’t know when a user with that one will appear in-game though…(the attire he is referring to is one of the outfits sold by NPCs)

The attires are designed with no difference in upper and lower parts. Moreover, there are no graphical changes when equipping accessories. Any plans to change this?

There are no plans to change that. The attires can be obtained from npcs as well as monster drops. There is a named boss called Golden Destroyer in Giant Desert area that drops a set. The set includes the basic attire along with a hat and wing-like addon.

We can mix theses with other attires, but the one dropped by that boss is the best match. Don’t you usually try to match your shoes with your pants in real life?

We made it so that obtaining the full set will make the user feel the coolest. We initially tried to implement the graphical effects of accessories, but the minute details weren’t catching the eyes, so we decided not to implement them.

I felt that a lot of the online games have attires that can be worn in real life. In short, they looked too plain and simple. Isn’t a game supposed to be where a person feels special and looks much cooler and fancier? I tried to emphasize that into BnS, and hence the results.

We steered away from separated attire (like top attire, bottom attire, foot attire, etc) to make gaming feel like going to a party and having fun. Rather than the answer, we consider this as the direction BnS took.

We will introduce monster attires and other unique designs in the future. They will cater to the users’ tastes.

The preset designs changed in 1st and 2nd CBT due to user feedback. Will they change in the future tests as well?

We look at feedbacks, along with the forums, in great detail. There was one user that posted a bunch of Korean art relics in an organized fashion.

We got a lot of new ideas and concepts from these relics. There was one where a tree looked like a dragon soaring through the sky…. Expect to see something like this in-game in the future.

We are constantly receiving feedbacks: NPCs and characters’ legs are too thick, the ankle is too thin, etc. So we look at helpful comments like those instead of comments like “Great game!” or “Love this game!!” in more detail to make the game better.

Speaking of feedbacks, it looks like love towards male characters will be lower than female characters.

That is true. I am saying this now but I hope the users will give more feedbacks on the male characters. The dev. Team thinks they are designing cool looking male characters, but since the feedback is significantly lower than females, they are considering making the males sexier.

Isn’t it because the female characters are too beautiful?

Something we are regretting. A male user should pick a male character…so we are trying hard to fix this problem.

How do you plan to change the male characters?

Nothing special. Just changing the hair style, facial shape, and animations. We think the main problem with the male characters is that they are too plain and simple.

In short, we think they lack charisma and appeal. It is hard to add different characteristics visually to male characters in online games~ such as a thuggish look, reckless/brash look, bad boy look, etc.

This is easy in console games, however. Hence we altered some things, but it looks like we need to change more. Therefore we need more feedback.

What if the user feedback asks for thigh size reduction for female characters?

If we are changing body parts, we need to do it in relation to the other body parts. We don't want the users to have a “I like this character but I don’t like this body part, so I won’t play it” mentality.

Isn’t it the same area as Art Director Kim Hyung Tae’s trademark?

That is why there may be a limit on how much we can change. I think we will add more options for users to utilize instead of changing existing ones.

We know that a lot of manpower was used to make the stunning graphics. Are the fashion and character design where the most manpower was used?

There are actually more people for the animation and environment department. Character design is limited to only a minor group of people due to the unique artistic style. They still do their job well.

I believe animation decides a game’s gameplay quality. BnS animation in my opinion is the peak of online games. I am confident to say it is 3 times better than other well-made games out there.

The important aspect is how the target I am hitting is hit rather than how I am getting hit. BnS hit animation is different depending on how the target is hit.

You can be lifted into the air, be choked, or stumble and roll over. This applies to not only humanoid mobs but all the other mobs as well. To this extent, we consider the target’s hit animation more important.

We place more importance on stylistic combat and animation with another person rather than the same animation being used in zerg vs zerg battles. We want to provide users with unique experiences by expanding on this.

Server stress seems to be enormous. In real tests, server downs may occur within an hour.

That is why the server team is struggling right now. The amount of pressure on the server during regular open-field gameplay is about the same as another game’s RvR. If you look at it the other way, I guess you can say we are making good use of our servers.

Given how good the graphics is, it looks like a lot of resources go into each character.

We did not use more polygons or special effects to increase the graphic quality. We used a technique used in movie production called Mi Jang Shen (??). It models the character around the location, environmental color effects, contrast, light/shadow, and angle of the camera.

The graphics is considered great because we adjusted this technique to be neither too detailed nor sloppy. Since you played the game, you would have found out that BnS is not that demanding of a game. The graphic engine team’s effort is a factor, but aren’t you able to play the game with semi-high settings even if you only meet the minimum requirements?

In the opposite, are there extra options available for those users with high-end specs?

We are working on adding those options. Right now there is a noticeable different between high settings and max settings. We are trying to make the game look better even on the medium settings. Obviously, we are thinking of adding more options for max settings to satisfy those players.

The monsters all have unique designs and it’s hard to find the same mob in different regions. Is there a reason you are not recycling models?

We are not focusing on new designs for monsters, but rather, to make fighting new monsters in new regions to be always different.

We are not making monsters that look different, but have same attack patterns (aka easy to farm). We are focusing on the AI and the animations/behavior of each monster type. The animation team is working hard to make the skill motion look and feel unique.

Since humanoid monsters use the same skills as the player while also looking similar, there is a pvp feel to it.

We place importance on the concept of PvP. Monsters appear in martial-arts settings but person to person relationships are more important. Expect more humanoid enemies and other monsters sporting different action styles in the future.

This was interesting to read, and there sure ain't no wrong in making the guys hotter, the girls are otherwise getting all the spotlight.
Even tho my main is going to be a girl no matter what, I'd feel good playing as a hot guy with the mindset:
"I sure do look good"
(I'm feeling bad that I felt like I had to write it like that to prevent possible flaming about sexuality)

I sure hope that they keep some of the "plain" things for the guys anyway, because there's always that one plain guy that kicks ass when he gets into the action. Also, I prefer just being plain sometimes to even out some of the over the top outfits.

Yea, that actually was a bit of a letdown to read, it is matrial arts after all, so I see nothing wrong in having big thighs, especially for the Gon.
In fact, it'd be wrong to have the most muscular race have thin legged women, who would they lift withot a proper body supporting?

Hope the reduction won't be that sagnificant, I don't want a game full of stick(wo)men :joss_stick:

well Bae did say they are implementing a free customization feature. Hopefully that move will satisfy both the thunder-thigh lovers and the rest.

I personally like the big thighs too. c:

Also, I wouldn't say the males armors are exactly lazier. xD It is a bit harder designing and dressing males than it is for females without making them look overdone or "gay-ish". Not trying to use that in a way to offend anyone btw. ^^;

I don't see that much difference between the male and female armors. They both have a lot of detail in them, they just don't have the same level of diversity. Like, If I were to use an example I would say girls can wear, skirts, leggins, shorts in different lenghts, pantaloons, panties, jeans, cargo-pants basically any type of pants, while guys just don't have the opportunity to have as many options. c: I guess you could put short shorts or leggings on males, but I don't think that's the audience the dev team wants to draw in since they want more males to play male characters.

Don't get me wrong though, I still think they can make the armors/clothes more interesting if they wanted to though. I think of more than a few ways to do so. xD I just wouldn't say they're any lazier than the females considering what you'd expect guys to wear.

That is so true, people complain so a change is made to begin with, and now I'm here complaining about the potential change.
Man, now I sure feel childish.

Idk maybe it's just me but i dont feel as if they tried hard enough for the males....male lyns pass because of their cuteness but every outfit i have seen a jin where or a gon it doesn't excite me. I really don't know what it is maybe they should play around with designs more and i know they can do it cause there awesome like that. The girls are fine but please work on the men make them sexy

That entire interview and the answers tells me one thing: We've been doing our homework and taking notes from other successful MMOG, where the animation of characters and their fluid movements, allows them to blend with the environment and the player.
Which is the core fundamental to any MMOG aspiring to be a success among the MMOG fan base.

Once that's down, the rest is a road trip across an endless world.
I think they're still on the right path. Lets hope it stays so.

I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on hara-kiri rock. I need scissors! 61!

2 things i liked
1. Many attires and more to come. Can't wait to find that one outfit that suits my taste

2. Not recycling any mobs

I definitely like the sound of more outfits. Outfits are nice~

And I wonder how they're going to revamp the males. I do agree that they looked a little plain in comparison to the females. I'll probably still make a female anyway, because I am and like playing them, but I do want to see some males that live up to the standard. Almost no one played males in the CBT it looked like :(

But I don't want to see thigh reduction :\ the variety of the body is what draws me to the Gon. I'm tired off all females being designed so delicately. It gives bad body image; curvy girls are gorgeous, too :3

Love the fact that the mobs won't be recycled, revamp on males, and the work done on hit animations. :joss_stick:

Nothing kills a game PVE wise than recycled mobs painted a different color...
This works in jrpgs because it works and most times it fits. But in an mmorpgs it just feels lazy.

I can't believe Hyung-Tae Kim is actually thinking of reducing thigh sizes for females, is he serious? That's the first time I've lost respect for him and Teambloodlust.

I'll try to stay as calm as possible and remember that character creation will allow us to model our character however we want. But they better not dare limit thigh sizes.

Honestly every time someone.....excuse my language bitches about curvaceous women it just angers the hell out of me
What the hell is wrong with big thighs? bust? buns? Anyone a Sir Mixalot fan? :(

More than likely they'll just allow you to pick the type of build a character would have, so you'll be able to choose if your character is waif-ish or curvaceous. It sounded more like they want to add more options and not change the existing ones. As for the complaints of the thighs, I don't know if it's because that's not popular there (may be possibly considered "fat") or if there are a lot of people who just prefer thinner characters.

Also, I think it's less that the males seem bland, but more that the female characters happen to be very alluring, as they mentioned (and are apparently regretting; I had forgotten that most Korean MMOs force - or at least heavily suggest - players to play their own gender). While I do appreciate that the males will now be getting more attention to them, I don't know how much it'll actually affect the players' choices on the gender they'd rather play.
