Upgrading on a budget

Couple years back, got a storebought Dell Studio XPS 8100. Wasn't my choice, but I didn't realize how badly I'd be limiting myself either.

Right now I got a 350 watt psu and a GT 240 (upgraded from a 220).

My plan is to buy a new power supply (500ish watts), then decide from there what card to get.

Assuming keeping price to a minimum, and preferably sticking to nvidia, what do you recommend cardwise?

If you want to max out everything with around 40- fps, I recommend Radeon 7850, which is around $189 - $229
If you really want to stick with nvidia, get 660, which will easily reach around 60+fps at max and is around $219 - 289$

Was thinking cheaper than that, actually.

But mainly I want to get the character graphics up to max, and am willing to compromise on the rest.

Cheaper? I think 7850 is the lowest you can go, if you want to play in max setting :]
Look it up in newegg, some go down as much as $164

660ti is overkill :], Just 660 is enough

What is your total budget?
How long of a graphics card can your system fit?

I'll have to do my research to be sure what will fit in my case, but it seems like I can do alright for myself as far as the newer cards go, now that I learned that PCIe 3.0 is backwards compatible with what I have.

Well one important part what will affect recommendation is at what cresolution do you plan to play it at ? Because @1080p res with a 7850 @ max ain't happening... and ill say you'll need at least 250~ 300$ for this.. you don't want a cappy power supply that will fry the rest of your pc either =/

When you upgrade your PSU go with Seasonic . They're the best out there when it comes to PSUs and make sure its 80 plus certified

Just to get some real recomendations in:

All three are the same PSU, all made by seasonic, the antec one being a little less efficient, reflects in the lowered price. The modular one will be a lot less stressful to manage cables with.

The sapphire 7870 had issues with bad capacitors on older revisions but it shouldn't be a problem as long as newegg isn't still selling old stock.

At $250 that 660ti is actually a good deal. keep in mind that the 7870 comes extremely close to the 660ti in performance, even in games that typically do better on NVidia cards.

Antec PSU+ 7870=$265, if that's still above your budget then save up some more.
