  1. The bigger picture of Oceanic servers.

    I'm not trying to be offensive but not everything needs a TL;DR for people with the attention span of a rock. Granted, I may be in the minority here, but I'd rather read a lengthier and well articulated comment / argument than "I <3 PvP. Latency from AU -> US sucks. No B&S for me. Plz give servers or explain why not!!1!!1 Kthxbai." To each their own though. OP, if you've read through the entirety of the AU server petition thread you'd have read my posts. Historically, Korean MMOs localised for the 'west' aren't break out hits - and NCsoft is playing it safe until they can gauge interest and revenue in the bigger EU/US markets. I'd have been completely taken by surprise if they'd decided to launch with Oceanic servers. Pre-orders give them an idea of interest and some data points to play with but every MMO has a concurrency spike at release, followed by a gradual (or quick) decline until it reaches a player base 'plateau.' NCSoft aren't well known for providing a great player/customer experience either - look at how many MMOs they have shuttered over the years. Let alone any MMO (not MOBA etc.) that has launched with Oceanic servers. They have all been consolidated back to EU/US servers. Even games like SWTOR deployed local region players only to roll them back when subscriber numbers dropped. WoW is the only exception which deployed local region servers (not "Oceania" in name but actually physically located closer) within the last few years. Your comments have merit - and as an Australian, topics such as equitable pricing and equivalent/consistent service offering resonate with me. The reality however, is that our region doesn't seem to have the player numbers to justify local servers. Especially not with a game 'untested' in the western market. While I love B&S and hope it's a hit, I think it'll still be a somewhat niche title and it's facing into stiffer competition with the likes of Black Desert (different games, but I love it too). In all likelihood, I doubt NCSoft even has a magic number in mind that would justify Oceanic servers at this stage or in the near future. I imagine it's very much a 'wait and see how this (being US/EU launch) goes first, then we'll assess it down the track.' Don't get me wrong, I want local servers just as much as the next person. I imagine Julianne Harty (Blade and Soul Brand Manager), known as NC Elusive on the dojo, has championed the cause far more than anyone else would have because she herself is an Australian (she's originally from Brissie I think. Alas no one's perfect...) As an aside, I think you're neglecting the fact that many of the Dojo members from all over the world have endured high latency playing the KR, CN, JP and TW versions of Blade and Soul for years. High latency is not unfamiliar to them for this game. That's why so many of them are thrilled at the prospect of double digit latency. They get it, the issue just isn't relevant for them any more. This doesn't need another separate thread though. Respectfully, your comments echo those already made by others and are no more or less important than the perspectives, thoughts and arguments already offered. The responses from the B&S/NCSoft team so far, coupled with the silence on anything with detail speaks for itself as well. I'd love it if they surprised us with Oceanic region servers (really), but I'm not holding my breath.
  2. Ping Boosters for SEA/Oceanic players

    We're probably looking at the 200-300 range from SEA. Did some basic testing with the help of users on the Dojo and the large fan base in South America via their Facebook fan page. (Sadly, I didn't get many respondents from the SEA region at the time) Did some basic testing here for SEA: And here for South America: Will be interesting to see what beta brings and 'real life' experiences on the servers in NA. It's unrealistic to assume that a ping booster will contribute a massive difference to latency but they generally seem to 'smooth out the spikes' and offer a 'more stable' connection. Also, "unplayable" gets thrown around far too often. While it's absolutely true that B&S will provide a better experience with lower latency, if you still have FUN and the latency doesn't hugely impact *your* experience then it doesn't matter too much what other people may suggest. Again, we'll never get great ping to NA servers due to geographical distance - but let's see what beta testing shakes out. The NCSoft team have indicated that should there be sufficient interest then a case could be made for SEA based English servers.

  4. South America Server Possibility?

    Saturday 6th June 2015 Update for South American latency survey results Go Brazilians for adding so many responses so quickly! At the time I am posting, there are still 169 MORE results (so 269 responses total so far). Great stuff. Unfortunately, I'm not able to retrieve them all on a free SurveyMonkey account. KhaliD and I are deciding what we do next based on how many total responses we get over the coming weeks. 1) Overall Latency Results for respondents in the South America region This is self explanatory, I have grouped up latency results in 10ms intervals by the number of survey responses. 2) Average Latency by Region/Area I didn't realise but SurveyMonkey automatically captures IP addresses - so I was able to approximate the regions some people might be connecting from. IP address look ups provide a rough indication of location so I figured I'd represent it here. There is probably still not enough data but I was curious to see if certain areas had better ping results than others. For example, larger cities with better infrastructure perhaps. (Note! There is no personally identifiable information in any data I am presenting here) 3) Average Latency by ISP & number of users Similar to the above, it's interesting what other easily and freely available information comes with an IP address. (This is the same way that Google can automatically pick the right country homepage for you when you go to Google.com). IP address ranges are also registered to Internet Service Providers / Networks. I was wondering if particular ISP's might have better results than others. If so, it might help people make an informed decision on a potentially better ISP to use for MMO gaming in general. 4) Average Latency by Country, # of Responses by Country and which Measurement Service Used The titles & numbers are self explanatory here. More data is always helpful to build a better picture though. (There is a slight inconsistency in the numbers as I forgot to filter out two half completed responses - which is why the total # in Measurement Service used is 82 and the Respondents by Country is 80. Minor. I'll correct in the next patch if we proceed with this) 5) (Interactive) TargetMap Link Click on the link directly above - this map does not recognise pin point areas so it's still rolled up only at the country level. However, the actual data is included at the bottom of the page if you click a particular country (blue dot) - I have removed anything personally identifiable (i.e. IP address & host names). This information is already represented in the other graphs, I just wanted something visual as well as a way to open up the raw data to others who might be interested in looking at it. I've opted only to collate and represent the data collected to date. I could run a more detailed analysis to see if there is any statistically significant correlation between factors such as ISP, location etc. but felt the above information is adequate for the moment. (My knowledge of the South America region (locations) and Portuguese/Spanish is limited, so if anything looks blatantly wrong, let me know!) Interested in people's feedback and thoughts - anything look out of the ordinary? Interesting? Wrong? Useful?
  5. Allow Binding F Key to Movement

    Have you looked at changing windows registry keys for keyboard layout / mapping? E.g. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/remap-keyboard-free-tools-windows/ I've used SharpKeys in the past to map the context menu (i.e. simulate right click in windows explorer on a file, desktop etc.) rather than needing to right click with my mouse. In your case, you might want to look at creating a set of .REG files - one to set the mappings to your preference for Blade and Soul and the other to revert it back. So potentially, you could have your 'Control scheme layout' for playing the game then use a shortcut key like ALT+SHIFT (or whatever you specify) to switch to 'English typing' - quickly and with minimal fuss. (If you've played other regions of B&S then you might have some familiarity with switching to the Chinese keyboard to enter text etc.) Ideally, yes - it would be significantly easier to just allow "F" to be remapped in the game client so push for that. It should be a relatively simple thing for NCSoft to do. However, if they don't - the above might give you another option / workaround - which you can probably experiment / test with now in the CN /TW versions. Good luck!

In fairness and something that might not be immediately clear, but the reasoning for having only Oceanic players sign the petition is to provide an indication of population size in our region that wants a local region server. Having inflated numbers in the petition with players from other regions voting to 'help us out' may only hurt us in the long run. Why? Because NCSoft might be under the impression that there are more people interested than there actually are. If they commit resources, effort and incur costs (ongoing) to maintain local regional servers for a non-sustainable population then it's; a) not financially viable for them to continue (see my reference to SWTOR earlier in this thread) and/or b) a reduced population which makes it frustrating for players to find others to play with. In the case of b) there typically seems to come a point where people have difficulty finding groups of others to play with so they stop logging in. And so it goes for the next person, and the next. Until, ultimately, the server becomes a 'ghost town' and the only real option is to close it. Especially if NCSoft have minimum revenue targets after operational costs for each region. Ideally, we all have a strong desire for a local regional server as it's the best solution - and NCSoft are at least aware of that. However, let's not allow that desire to push us into inflammatory or accusatory posts with each other. There was a reason Radeyz suggested only Oceanic/SEA players sign the petition. Hopefully that reason is a little clearer now.

  8. 378ms? Oh my... I think our community liaisons are aware. They've said as much on multiple occasions and I think that's great recognition. They've probably acknowledged requests for an Oceanic server more than requests for a South American server - at least as far as I have seen. (Also, why is the South American server request not pinned as well?) The onus is on us now to show there's enough interest - and while it's on its way, it could do with substantially more. I imagine there hasn't been a response in this thread because at present, it's early days, the message is still getting out there and realistically - the focus is on NA/EU regardless of the outcome of this petition. I dare say we may see a canned response stating that the focus is on the current NA/EU region launch and Oceanic servers will be reviewed over time depending on what they can see in player numbers for NA. At the moment, ~1000 signatures on a petition is great but even if you were to assume every one of those people contributed $15 per month, that's potentially not very much money on a monthly basis. Keeping in mind also that B&S is launching as F2P and there are always an element of people who don't contribute anything financially. (On the flip side to that, there are the 'cash shop whales' that might compensate for this.) NCSoft will have an average revenue per user figure that they're projecting based on a minimum population base +/- x% variation to ensure the game is financially profitable over time for each region. As much as we might like them to, they aren't going to share that information with us because it infers that if we reach a minimum number, they'll promise to provision Oceanic servers - and people will hold them to that inferred promise. What if player numbers dip over time? Do they believe Oceanic players still play on NA regardless? Still financially support the game? (Quick bit of research suggests the costs actually may not that be expensive for a managed solution (and Googling "petitions for Oceanic (game) servers" shows these requests pop up for every single game. I think the bigger roadblock for us will be NCSoft's strategy and interest (or lack thereof) in our experience as players.) Right or wrong, my perception is that NCSoft consider the Western market as rather secondary to their Asian markets. Our feedback/experience sometimes feels as if it doesn't mean much. While our community liaisons/managers might be on 'our side,' I think all we'll see in response to this is an approach to empathise and 'manage our expectations.' Still, keep pushing the petition out there everyone !
  9. Classes And Ping

    I personally found Destroyers 'adequate' to play PvE solo on CN anywhere from 200+ms PvP was... not fun. Having said that, I've never been able to ani-cancel as others have been describing and only seen it via YouTube / read others experiences on it. It's nice to see that people think certain classes might be comfortable to play with 200+ms but I see that being an unacceptable compromise: Be effective and choose a class you might not like as much or choose a class you prefer the play style/idea of and potentially invoke the ire and rage of others when you physically can't perform as well as others / be frustrated with the play experience. Out of curiosity, does B&S have DPS parsers available? (Either built in to the client or third party?) Great thread to pull in subjective opinions / experiences by the way!
  10. Latency seems to be a very hot topic at the moment, especially considering we're mostly just biding our time until more information becomes available. One of the things I have been looking at for South East Asia / Oceanic players and South American players is a way to capture some data on latency to support the case for local regional servers given its direct impact on player experience. (In addition to the expressions of interest / petitions for local regional servers) To support that, I've created the a quick and dirty survey to get an indication of what latency might look like for those of us from those regions and collate the information in one place. For an idea of what that looks like, check the spoiler tags below. (You can also check the survey out via the links included below but please refrain from submitting data unless you're in SEA/South America) (If there's adequate interest, I'd be happy to extend the survey for NA & EU players.) It could be useful in getting a view of what our ping looks like from various regions/countries/states and give us some measurable data to understand how we might improve our game experience. Of course, the relevant caveats apply - we don't have live NA/EU B&S servers to real test ping etc. but it's a start with what we have. At the very least, it might highlight why some people from the same country might see significant variation: Is someone using a VPN/Booster? Does a VPN/Booster make a big difference? Is it worth the additional cost? Are certain VPN/Boosters better or worse generally? Are certain VPN/Boosters better for particular regions/countries but worse for others? Could it highlight a better ISP to use when comparing results to someone else in your area? Does the time of day make a difference? Something else? These are questions that we can start asking now and continue testing during beta / live launch of B&S. (Happy for any suggestions also.) Also, if you can, take a brief survey to which will give us an indication of latency from our region / specific countries. Every little bit will help in supporting a case to NCSoft and give our community managers information to lobby on our behalf: I appreciate the efforts of the people behind the translation mods but I personally want to be able to play an English localised version because for me, it's not just about latency (although that's hugely important too).

The more data that people can supply through this survey, the more information we'll have to get a consolidated view of what our latency will look like. With all the caveats of course, it's not the B&S server, or a live environment etc. but it's as good an indication as we're going to get with what we have available now.     Like I said, nothing new there and I completely understand the reasons. I'm just curious as to whether there might be anything we can be part of in the future (I'm not putting you on the spot for an immediate answer) as it'd be nice to be included. Outside of forum votes on a topic, I don't recall any publisher/studio being in a position to provide a level playing field - latency, needing to pay extra for a service like WTFast to be moderately competitive, promotions, maintenance during our primetime etc. Them's the breaks I guess. :surrender: Genuinely appreciate the thought however. Best of luck to everyone who'll be entering though - I can still enjoy looking at all your creative submissions!

    Sounds exciting ! On the second point, no surprises there - it's pretty par for the course. In one of your previous posts you mentioned not wanting to do something that would be exclusive to only some members of the community. Will there be any other opportunities for those outside the US and EU to be involved?
