  1. It was a nice summer evening when after a deep reflection I realized I should protect the content of my HDDs from threats that, if I had thought a bit more, I would have seen they were not threats at all. After all, I don't keep nuclear weapons' specifications or military secrets, but simple personal data that I don't want to erase nor let being seen. I soon gained interest in cryptography and started researching. Before I realized, I was already moving all my important (and embarassing) files into an external HDD that I later encrypted. An AES algorithm and a 128 bit password that, should I say it wasn't intuitive at all, got the job done. My HDD was now safe to all potential threats that surrounded my bedroom, like for example my mom or the cleaning lady... After some weeks I realized I needed to get back something from the HDD, so I plugged it in while thinking about how satisfied I was with such a secure drive. Yeah, so secure that even I couldn't access it. After 10 failed attempts at guessing the password, I concluded I had a huge problem... my frustration was immense, but I just had to accept that I had forgotten the password. It took me some days to start recovering from my depression. Later I began investigating again, but there was no good way of recovering my HDD's password. I made an excel table with all the possible combinations and variations of passwords that I usually use, but after entering 320 of those, the good one was not among them. After more investigation I concluded the only way was to do a brute force attack on it, either with dictionaries or using my own criteria, but in any case, I used a probability calculator and found out that it would take more years than my expected lifespan to recover that password, since it was alphanumerical and had many characters. Conclusion: I can only wait for quantum computing to reach our homes in order to do it by brute force without dying in the attempt. Or I could also borrow a supercomputer that works at 10 petaflops/second... Decrypting something like this is gonna be almost impossible. Some time ago, there was an organization that offered 1 million dollars to anyone that could decrypt a 128 bit password like mine. And I haven't even mentioned how the FBI has so many problems to access encrypted HDDs of potential criminals, failing attempt after attempt and sometimes damaging data in the process. In my case I have lost acquired software for a value of aproximately 2.000 euros, dozens of thousands of valuable pictures, documents, backups of projects I had, music, videos, databases, and perhaps most importantly, 10 years of my life in binary code. The excess of security could be our damnation, what an irony, right?

  2. Don't worry guys, at some point in the future we'll all wear some fancy glasses that will display automatically the appropiate subtitles according to what the person in front of us is saying. Problem? language schools?
  3. There is a saying that goes like this: "If you speak two languages you are bilingual. If you speak only one you are American". I do not want to offend anybody, but the whole situation you describe is really easy to understand from the eyes of a non-American. I live in Western Europe and I am bilingual; I speak my country's language plus another regional language which is completely different. I was educated to use both at the same level. Additionally, they taught me English from an early age, just like any other student in my country. By the time we enter university we have to dominate 3 languages, but some of us know 4 or 5, because our brain is used to switching from one way of thinking to another. Learning stuff is easy as you are mentally capable of acquiring more information. Referring to your original question, you are an English speaker willing to learn a Romanic language. That is not as easy as it would be for a Romanic language speaker. In other words, if you are Spanish, learning Italian, Portuguese, and even French is going to be easy peasy. It works the same way viceversa. For an Italian it will be easy to learn Spanish, Portuguese... etc So, why is it difficult for you to learn a Romanic language? Because you are a native speaker of English (a Germanic language), which is much more similar to German and all the languages from northern Europe. On top of that, English is the universal language so Americans might think they do not have the need to learn anything else because their language is the standard. I do not perceive in the US that urge that we have in the rest of the world to learn languages. Our teachers in Europe look like parrots repeating "If you do not learn English, you will never find a job". Moreover, videogames and movies are not always translated or dubbed to our native language, especially if it does not have many speakers, so we are exposed to English and we end up learning it whether we like it or not.
  4. Korean girldfriend who plays BnS ? holy moly... Welcome to the Dojo! have fun~
  5. Stop making stupid patches and bring the damn game to the west. Having a team of programmers to do this nonsense instead of something useful is a waste of time and resources. I've been waiting for this game since the first trailer came out years ago, I've been patient all the time, and I don't care if I have to wait more, but honestly, think about what they have been doing. They abandoned all their fans in the west and just focused on feeding their Korean fanbase, spoiling them with new trendy-sexy-fancy clothes for their lvl 45 characters, which in many cases don't even make sense, like this one... is this supposed to target transsexual players or wtf is going on? Don't worry NCSoft, just keep doing this, you'll have one less player to worry about.
  6. Yes, and you believe them ? If you need the sickest graphic cards con the market just to play Crysis 3, and those guys say they can improve current games by a factor of 100.000 ... I'm afraid you need more power, no matter how you look at it. What I mean about virtual reality is that it involves a physical presence on another world. Wearing some big goggles doesn't automatically create that effect of being present somewhere else. You need to take care about the audio, you need to take care about feelings, tactile stuff, feedback on your body... not only holding a controller... because if that's all we are going to get, I'll just forget about it. If virtual reality doesn't make you feel you are there, what's the difference between that and watching a 3D movie or playing a 3D game? I want to FEEL the world.
  7. The second video was AMAZING... but virtual reality is still quite far from happening... because wearing huge goggles doesn't count xD So let's just enjoy the epicness of new graphics. Anyway I'm afraid we'll need huge PCs to run that.
  8. Well it's natural that you were reminded of Magna Carta since the artist is the same (Hyung Tae Kim) as you probably already know ^^ Welcome to the Dojo! enjoy your stay~
  9. Ladies and gentlemen, we are approaching the Uncanny Valley.
  10. Escaflowne has one of the most beautiful and deep anime soundtracks ever...
  11. Ok, then have a cookie while I think of a solution... *gives cookie* Btw, knowing a bit more about you would help =P Your link to Joe Hisaishi's music at least proved that you know good music =D so I guess you already saw Studio Ghibli's movies xP
  12. When you say you finished school you literally mean you graduated from high school or something like that? I ask this to know if the problem of you being bored is going to last in the long term or just during some hypothetical holidays... Anyway, I always make the same recommendation... watch Death Note. Best anime ever, HUGE plot, it will keep your attention. Only the first episode will be enough to know if you'll like it ;)
  13. Please don't be offended by my question but... are you sure you want to spend your time in Japan playing online games? Just asking...
  14. You freaked me out, I saw "B&S NA release date" and I thought this was the actual announcement... LOL I encourage you to make a quick search before asking this kind of things because they are usually answered a thousand times xD but don't worry, since you are new here I'll be glad to explain it. The short answer is: No, we don't know anything yet. Just visit the official BnS West website, and you'll see how abandoned we are: http://www.bladeandsoul.com It's been months since they published something, however even someone like me, who hates to make predictions, can assume we will have a beta testing period during the present year... I think it's safe to make such estimation - it's a really conservative one. In the best case scenario we would have a launch around September or the end of this year. A more pessimistic estimation would be the beginning of 2014. But again, we don't know. By the way, welcome to the Dojo ;D
