African American Hairstyles

24 posts in this topic

Just something I've been pondering about. I myself am black and lately I've been thinking about trying out a new hairstyle, specifically that mullet-like style similar to Robin Shou (Liu Kang in the Mortal Kombat movies). Thing is, I've been looking online for black men with different hairstyles other than dreads, cornrows, afros, and short hair with various designs on top, but couldnt find anything, Also, I kinda talked to my parents about it and they instantly said "no". I dont kno why they and some of my friends are so negative about this decision (if i go through with it). I think having a new style will help me embrace who i really am, and release me of my constraints of my heritage (not saying its a bad thing). So I need help;

1. Should continue to debate with my parents about this or give in and keep my short hair?

2. Do you know any black men with different hairstyles other than the usual mentioned above?

I posted some pics of me here: how do u think I would look with the new hairstyle?

Well James Brown is the closest thing I can think of

Go with it if you want/can, but don't if you don't want to/can't

You might want to wait to get out to College/University first though

Respect your parents 'till you can get out to your own dorm/place

I like the way you're asking for none typical hairstyles and people have just instantly shot in with cornrows and dreads >_>

Anyway, respecting your parents is all well and good etc...but you're 18 years old so I think being allowed to do as you wish with your own hair isn't asking much - if you want to change something for yourself, and you feel it will make you feel more ... yourself, then I'd say go for it, even if it goes against what other people sink - I mean I've had some pretty weird and wonderful hairstyles in the past, despite what some others thought and I enjoyed having them, I've gone a bit more reserved now but I don't regret it. As for what you should go with it's very difficult to say what would 'look good' on a person without actually trying it out, I'd say find a selection of stuff you like, narrow it down, go for the one that strikes your interest most, if it doesn't work ... Hair grows back and can be restyled so you've not really got anything to worry about, so it doesn't hurt to try :)

Well, a lot of parents are all about: "You live under my roof, you follow my rules." I think once you're living on your own, you can do what you want with your hair.

I can't really give you any help with that though. I don't know many black men.

Indeed, imo he should wait 'till he leaves for College/University or moves out

Hair is a low priority. Don't obsess yourself with something so meaningless at the moment

Specially if it affects others (family)

It all depends on your hair.

For example, I have really thick hair that doesn't take to color or curls, so when I attempted a perm, it just made my hair really hard to work with. If your hair is more oily than certain hairstyles won't work. What's the texture of your hair?

My mom is a hairdresser, and the only person who cuts my hair (by choice) and I've asked her to do things to my hair that she'd never thought would work, but after she got done, she realized, "Huh, I thought that would end up awful, but it looks really good!" So, even though her informed decision was originally against it, she saw it worked really well for me.

I have a similar problem with my hair refusing to grow long (it just gets thicker =~.~=)

Honestly, I think that if you can grow a mullet and you still want one by the time you have enough hair for a mullet, you should get one. If you like it, then you're good to go!

If you don't like it, you can get a different hair cut (because a bad hair cut with long hair is easier to fix than a bad hair cut with thick hair)

I Swear you and the girl in that picture look extremely familiar.

Anyway~

I've always wished I could get myself a cool hairstyle but I never invested any thought into it just cut it. But my hair gets nice and soft, grows a bit then gets this smooth texture to it.

But I'm going to jump on ahead and say respect your parents, for as long as you're under their roof. Just my culture though, respect parents always.

But I think it'll be pretty easy to experiment and all that good stuff, especially since you look just fine with short hair should in case a failed style needs to be cut off.

Wow, thanks for the feedback guys. Ok, first let me answer some of the questions:

My hair is (very) curly and thick, and a little soft. My parents always said when cutting my hair I had "great hair" but i never knew what they meant by that. Also its a dark black natural color. When cut my hair usually grows right back in no more than a month.

@ Shinaji lol ur not the first to say that about my ex gf/prom date. I dont see the resemblance. one time someone asked us if we were brother and sister lol.... how horrible

Whenever the situation arises again with my parents if they say cut my hair then i'll cut it. The Ohio State is only about 6 weeks away anyway. I've been thinking about it and talking to my friends and decided maybe not a mullet, or not even a style but just me with my hair (long) hanging down all sides of my face. I'll do stuff to it when the time comes, tbh I don't really know much about hair since I always just cut mines and be done with it lol.

sort of like this

Wow, i've been away for a really long time, I wonder if you guys are still alive lol. Anyway, I finally decided on what to do with my hair (temporarily at least), and I chose slickback style. My hair is stlll short so I guess i'll just keep it like this until it gets longer, then I'll just straighten it with an iron.

You still look familiar, even my brother and neighbor were asking. Lol.

Any Jamaican heritage?

Not bad, cant' see the finer details of the style due to the filter effect though. (Or maybe it's the camera.)

It's your hair friend. You can do whatever you want with them. Also, a hairstyle is not permanent, so you don't have anything to lose. I say if you like it, do it.

Looks awesome! And I agree with Mad_Bunny, you can always do a new hairstyle whenever you choose to.

The biggest fear is what hairstyle is good for a professional job and which are not... This one's 100% for a job. The blacklisted hairstyles are probably the: afros, mohawks, emo, cornrows (though I've seen SOME pros with this style), shaggy.

All in all pretty cool!

Lol thats so weird, thats like the 4th time someone in my life said I look like Nick Cannon. I dont know what to say/think about that actually lol. But I like this hairstyle actually, I'm probably gonna keep it while growing my hair until it gets long enough to relax it and straighten it with an iron.

it's not just african americans. : o every hair texture on a race is usually limited to a select few hairstyles.

the reason why some other people can create so many is because of hair products like hair gel, hot iron, perm, and wigs.

that's what cocasian people, asian people, indian people, etc. do. they use artificial products to style their hair.

that being the case, no matter what race you are, you can get any hair style you want to have. can't guarantee it won't be troublesome to manage though.

so yeah, besides a fro or a haircut, as long as you have artificial products: you can do just about anything with your hair.

white people usually use perm / hot iron to curl their hair. (so do asians of course).

and black people like african americans usually use it to straighten it.

and we alllll use hair gel to make it gloss or stand up.

and like i said, either that or you could use a wig. all celebrities, and i mean all, have worn wigs. and most of them wear them constantly when taking magazine shots, etc. and i don't mean bald headed / old celebrities. i mean angelina jolie, tom cruise, johnny depp, etc. celebrities. they feel like having some long hair with their outfit, they get a wig. they feel like having a fro or some curls? they either get a wig or perm it. that's usually how it goes.

so there's no need to limit yourself so much. whatever you see that you like, you can go for it and try to recreate it somehow if you really are that eager.
