Final Fantasy 13: Lightning Returns

18 posts in this topic

So.... Square-Enix are mixing things up (again...) With the latest iteration of the FF13 franchise.

Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns is the 3rd part of the ff13 mini series and is appearing to be very different from previous FF titles by adding a Majora's Mask-esque time mechanic. In short; The world is gonna end in 13 days and you have to stop it.

The game will also feature more action oriented combat and a much more customizable lightning... Release is planned for sometime next year, which goes to show that Square meant it when they said they were trying to decrease development times, as production only began this year (It was only announced in September so I wonder how polished this will make the game when comapared to ff12 and 13's 5 year development times)

More info can be found on Kotaku: http://kotaku.com/5965079/how-lightning-returns-final-fantasy-xiii-makes-players-manage-time?tag=final-fantasy

So what are your thoughts? Like with pretty much all new Final Fantasies I'm excited to see where they go yet my expectations aren't overly high :joss_stick:

They already HAVE killed me with the first ff13 and beat a dead horse with 13-2 and continued to beat it till it turned to a nice smoothie consistency. They just need to give ffvs13 and be done with it already

I am that odd kid out who gets bullied as I actually enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII myself. I thought it was pretty good *once you get past chapter 4~5 which most people didn't as they were far too busy complaining about how the attack command is their only option EVEN THOUGH it has been like this since FFI and people seem to have forgot this *GASP FOR AIR* :D*. I won't deny the game was not as expansive as most Final Fantasy games *dat corridor* but I had way too much fun as I enjoyed the characters and I LOVED the combat system once the game opens up, paradigm shift is...like one of the best things in a RPG I have ever seen and let us not get started on that musical score SHESHHH.

Also when you get to the other area I won't mention for those who have yet to play or who may wish to go back someday the game REALLY opens up with quests available, exploration, hidden bosses and all the other things you would expect from a Final Fantasy game although it happens VERY late and was for many too little too late.

Anyway um yeah I am looking forward to this game, didn't like FFXIII-2 tbh due to god awful Serah/Nameless Male Nobody but I hope this game is as fun as the first ^_^.

Edit - OH AND YOU GET TO RIDE A CHOCOBO My link

Eh? Crisis Core had a 'dodge button'...

Though I like the sound of this considering FF13 had a lot of times of me kind of raging inside because even though it had a quasi-action feel to it I could not get the fuck out of the way when I wanted to.

Something about that game being so active and yet me standing there getting pummeled like a moron brushed me the wrong way. (I got over it after a while but still.)

I'm actually kind of hopeful for this though---It feels like Final Fantasy is kind of struggling for a way to invent a method to combind turn-based with action mechanics...and well to be frank I feel they've come the longest and are the most likely to create something innovative in terms of battle systems than anyone else in their genre.

That's what makes them interesting to me.

(Granted...I also have this wonderful ability to play games with no expectations and enjoy them objectively Enjoy them for what they have instead of lamenting on what they don't.)

Well first lets not let this topic turn into people's displeasure for FFXIII or how Versus is taking forever to be developed. As for Lightning Returns I look forward to finishing the saga and hope this turns out to be a lot better than FFXIII-2. I'm interested in seeing how the gameplay turns out and even more so if interested in the time management factor within the game.

Eh, I dunno. I might skip this one. I thoroughly enjoyed FFXIII, but I couldn't get into XIII-2. The only part I liked was downloadable outfits xD I spent like $20 bucks on those and barely played the game at all ><

Well Kurori, if it makes you feel better, you could TECHNICALLY play as some other characters, including Lightning. They were put in as those crystal monsters you could capture. You had to buy the DLC and then you could fight them in some arena and capture them like a monster to put in your party.

I never got that far though xD But I know you could do it.
