Mobile cellular devices seem tailor-made for our increasingly technological, fast-paced modern way of life. Many have even given up their PCs and laptops entirely, and rely exclusively on the mobile machine to reach the Internet. Others, however, warn that we should be careful. Not as secure as PCs
McAfee is warning against over-reliance on mobile devices, particularly when it comes to secure transactions. As reported by the California-based computer security business, mobile phones will become the number one target of hackers and Internet scam artists in 2012.
Gary Davis of McAfee said in an interview with Scott Budman for the Bay area NBC affiliate, KNTV:
"Mobile devices are far behind where PCs are from a security perspective."
Watch out for identity theft
Davis points out that hackers will start sending viruses that allow hackers to see all online activity, making it easier to steal identities.
He said:
"They can put it into your device, and while you are doing a banking transaction, it could step in, capture the transaction, then take control of your bank and drain all of your money."
More forecasts
As reported by Davis, there will start to be coordination between occupation-style protestors and computer hackers. He calls this “the rise of the hacktivist.” He believes that hackers will work while people continue to protest:
"Hacktivists may take a major bank, do a denial of service attack for like an hour, while the occupiers are surrounding the bank and picketing. So we will see more coordinated efforts between both the physical and the virtual, though hacktivism."
Hackers work in denial of service attacks often. This makes it extremely hard for the Internet resource to be used.
How to protect yourself
Davis points out that there are ways to protect you. This involves using anti-virus software and being more cautious with emails and links. Treat your phone like you would treat your computer.
